Difficult Women
In English terminology Difficult Women is not a plural noun with a modifier. It is a commonplace - and frequently pejorative - umbrella term used to describe a broad spectrum of women who manifest in a plethora of different ways. There is no general equivalent for men: a man’s particularities and peculiarities are invariably described with specificity and precision. And men are rarely, if ever, called difficult.
The Difficult Women paintings are a personal exploration of difference - and difficulty - as it is subjectively perceived. They are the beginning of an ongoing project that grows more meaningful to me as time passes. They are a homage to women – to the women I love, to the women I revere - and to the women I will learn about and come to esteem.
Men know that they are different from women. The paintings in this series are my acknowledgement of - and respect for - the feeling of difference that resides within women – a feeling that men can only think about... Tony
